Bulletproof coffee? You may be asking yourself right now, what is that? Let me explain. This is my favorite way to drink my coffee! In fact, I’m addicted! That’s ok though because there is wonderful health benefits to come along with this not so average cup of joe. I am not the inventor of this recipe though, the first person to make it was David Asprey, but any cup of coffee with fat in it can be called bulletproof.
What’s in Bulletproof Coffee?
Unrefined, organic coconut oil. (Medium Chain Triglyceride) This oil has many health benefits. Coconut oil has been shown to burn fat and increase energy. This is true for any healthy oil, including saturated fat, including grass-fed organic butter. The fats you want to stay away from are the highly processed oils and trans-fats like margarine, canola, and vegetable oils. The myth that good fats (like the ones I mentioned above) cause heart disease is just not true. We need fat for our brain too! In fact, our brain is comprised of 25% cholesterol. If we cut out the cholesterol in our diet, the brain just doesn’t function like it should. There has been much research done to show that saturated fats are actually beneficial. Contrary to what certain agencies may be telling us, a low-fat diet is harmful to our health. To read more on this proven subject, I recommend the book Eat fat get thin.
Grass fed organic butter. Cows that have been raised with a diet of fresh grass have higher amounts of vitamins and nutrients in their butter including omega 3 fatty acids.
- 1 cup of brewed coffee
- 1 Tbsp. grass-fed butter or organic butter (recommended brand here)
- 1 Tbsp. organic unrefined coconut oil (recommended brand here)
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 Tbsp. heavy cream
- stevia (optional) to taste
Grab your blender, put everything in it and blend until frothy. Enjoy!
