Growing up I can vividly remember the smell of baked apples coming from the kitchen. My mom is an excellent pie maker and baker. She made apple crisp growing up as well as apple pie which was my favorite. I come from a family who loves their pie!
When we made the change to gluten-free/ grain free, I was determined to still be able to enjoy that same wonderful taste of fresh-baked apples in a dessert. I started to experiment with apple crisp right away! I wanted it to have the same crunch on top and gooey caramel texture and flavor as I have always loved growing up. Each time I’ve made it, it has become more and more just like what I remember. I now believe I have perfected it and am excited to share it with you! This dessert is nothing short of heaven in a bowl! I strongly believe healthy doesn’t have to mean you give up taste or texture. This dessert is made with coconut sugar which is similar to brown sugar in flavor, but a healthier option. Coconut sugar is not absorbed as quickly into the blood stream as regular brown cane sugar. This allows for a more stabilized blood sugar level. While there are still carbs in this recipe, It’s lower in carbs than the traditional apple crisp, and made with simple ingredients. Instead of using oats, I use coconut flakes in this recipe. This is a little trick many people do in Paleo and grain free baking to give the same texture as an oat. Bottom line, this is a dessert you can feel good about serving your family and friends at Thanksgiving or just about anytime. I hope you will enjoy this wonderful fall recipe as much as we do. Please come back and share a comment below and don’t forget to pin this recipe for later.
Happy Thanksgiving!
